What Is Cellulite and
How Can You Treat It?

Are you worried about cellulite? You’re not the only one. Cellulite is a normal and harmless skin condition that affects most women during their lifetime (and men, too). In this article, we delve deeper into cellulite, its causes, and one clinically-proven way to combat the signs of cellulite on hips, belly, and legs, within 12 weeks.

What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a type of localized fat that accumulates under the skin in uneven patterns and pushes against the connective tissues and collagen fibers, making the skin look lumpy or dimpled. Due to its appearance, cellulite is also known as orange peel-like skin. Depending on how pronounced it is, cellulite is categorized as mild (Grade 1), moderate (Grade 2), or severe (Grade 3). Mild cellulite is visible when you pinch or apply pressure to the skin. More pronounced cellulite presents as dimples and bulges on the skin surface, typically in the thighs, buttocks, stomach, and hips - the areas where fat tends to accumulate the most. Since women have a higher percentage of body fat than men, they are more predisposed to develop cellulite. That does not make men immune to it.

FAST FACTS

What is cellulite?
Cellulite refers to the dimpled or lumpy appearance of the skin, most commonly found on the thighs, buttocks, and hips.

What is cellulite?
Is cellulite common? Yes, cellulite is quite common, particularly among women. It is estimated that around 80-90% of women experience cellulite at some point in their lives.

Common causes of cellulite
hormonal and weight changes, lack of exercise, smoking, poor diet, pregnancy, and genetics all contribute to the appearance of cellulite.

Popular treatments of cellulite
There are a number of ways to treat cellulite, including laser and radiofrequency treatments, cryolipolysis, and perhaps less invasive - creams and lotions, such as The Body Cream from Augustinus Bader.

What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite refers to pockets of fat under the skin. However, excess fat is not the primary cause of cellulite. Your skin texture and the arrangement of the connective skin tissues is one of the main factors that influence the presence of cellulite. Compared to men, women tend to have thin skin, which shows cellulite more. The connective skin tissues in women run vertically and in right angles, allowing chambers of fat to form and push under the skin. In men, the connective tissues are arranged diagonally and in cross patterns, making the skin look smooth and even. With age, cellulite becomes more pronounced as the skin produces less collagen and estrogen hormone levels drop, causing the connective tissues underneath to lose their firmness. Other factors, often interacting with each other, including hormonal and weight changes, lack of exercise, smoking, poor diet, pregnancy, and genetics all contribute to the appearance of cellulite.

3 Myths About Cellulite

Despite cellulite being a common skin issue, there is a lot of misinformation surrounding this topic. Below, we smooth out the 3 most common myths about cellulite.

Cellulite is not an issue of excess fat. This misconception may push people to get on drastic diets or exercise routines, which ironically can make cellulite look worse. There are a number of environmental, lifestyle, and hereditary factors that cause cellulite to show. Maintaining a healthy weight and exercising can help reduce the appearance of cellulite, but it won’t erase it. Fact: Even thinner and fit people have cellulite.

Myth #1: Thin people don’t have cellulite

Myth #2: You can’t prevent the appearance of cellulite

While some things such as your skin structure and genetics are not under your control, there are some ways to help you prevent and limit the appearance of cellulite. Among them, eating a healthy diet, not smoking, being physically active, and maintaining a proper skincare routine will give you the best odds at preventing the appearance of cellulite or preventing it from becoming more pronounced.

Myth #3: You can’t treat cellulite

So far, there isn’t a permanent solution on the market that completely eliminates cellulite. So, while cellulite can’t be cured, it can be treated. There are a number of cellulite treatments available, including laser and radiofrequency treatments, cryolipolysis, and acoustic wave therapy. In most cases, these treatments can improve the appearance of cellulite, at least over a period of time before you need to repeat them. Meanwhile, topical creams that deeply nourish the skin and promote the renewal of skin cells and tissues can greatly improve the appearance of cellulite over the long-term.
